Exploratory study on psychotherapeutic factors of sand tray-play

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate psychotherapeutic factors of sand tray-play, and to present more direct, effective psychotherapy by using the play as a medium, regardless of theoretical background of psychotherapists. This study was conducted with two phases: the first study was to investigate components by qualitative analysis; and the second study was to review the applicability of components by empirical research. In order to conduct the first study, psychotherapists who used sand tray-play in clinical field were personally interviewed to be asked of therapeutic factors of sand tray-play with open questions, and 80 items were produced after performing consensual qualitative analysis of the contents. As for the second study, the questionnaires including the 80 items were verified of their content validity by 20 psychotherapists therapists role and the items were adjusted to be 69. The adjusted questionnaires were distributed to those who had experiences of having self-analysis or educational analysis with sand tray-play, and 134 questionnaires were collected to be analyzed. Three psychotherapeutic factors were identified from statistical processing including¡®self-exploration and confrontation¡¯, ¡®emotional stability,¡¯and¡®therapist¡¯s role¡¯.
